Kondrashin (1914-1981) one of the great conductors of the 20th Century is widely remembered as the conductor who led Van Cliburn's winning performances at the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 1958.  He then gained further Western recognition as he toured the United States with him afterwards.  A video is available on YouTube.  He was the Music Director of the Moscow Philharmonic from 1960 to 1975. He premiered Shostakovich's 4th and 13th Symphonies while he was there. He left the Soviet Union in 1978 and became Permanent Guest Conductor of the Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam. He also had long and fruitful relationships with the Vienna Philharmonic and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.  He left a large oeuvre of recordings which have stood the test of time very well.
