    Born in England as Sarah Frances Frost, Julia Marlowe was brought to America as a child and emerged as America's leading Shakespeare actress. In her youth she also performed as a singer, even in the unlikely role of Sir Joseph Porter in Gilbert and Sullivan's HMS Pinafore (1879).
