    Description

Georg Anthes was the leading dramatic tenor in Dresden for a decade before he came to the Metropolitan Opera in 1902. He was captured by Lionel Mapleson on cylinders singing with Lillian Nordica in the beautiful duet from Tristan und Isolde. Several other cylinders also capture Anthes singing at that time, but he never made commercial recordings. This is a very rare photo made just a couple of years after the opera was premiered. He was one of the great early Wagnerians.
