Flexy Racer model 300
A coaster with wheels for sidewalks, streets
This is a Flexy Racer model 300, the most popular coaster ever designed for kids. The Flexy has four wheels with four hubcaps, brakes, tires, rubber handle grips, great decals, and is gravity-driven.
We have repaired and restored this Flexy to either ride or display. There are few flaws, but this one is among the best, original Flexy Racers model 300s for sale in ages. With blue wheels, a specific decal and a set of rivets, this Flexy was manufactured by S.L. Allen & Co. in Philadelphia approxiately1954 to 1968.
All parts are from the manufacturer. The wood, the bumper, the wheels, the hubcaps, the tires, the brakes, the rivets, the metal braces, the brakes and all decals are original. The original Flexy Racer eagle/arrow decal on top is in very nice condition. The two decals underneath are in fine shape.
Two front tires are in very good condition -- lots of rubber, no cracks. One of the rear tires is an very good condition. One of the rear tires is in good condition -- one crack, well-worn. The rubber grips are in pretty good condition. Both have a tear. Treat the grips gently -- they're at least 50-years old -- and they'll be OK.
As to repairing and restoring, we devoted hours to the task:
·
We removed rust from the ball bearings on all four wheels. New grease was applied. The Flexy can travel downhill well.
·
We straightened out two axles, which was bent. This repair keeps the wheels rolling pretty much straight.
·
The metal bumper was bent badly. We bent back the bumper. It's not aligned perfectly, but you might be able to straighten it.
·
We removed old paint and rust on all metal.
·
We repainted the red bumper, red steering mechanism, the red wooden rails, and the red braces underneath, and the blue wheels. We polished and applied a sealant to the hubcaps to make them shine and to resist rust.
·
The wooden platform needed some attention, too. We sanding it down, applied a semi-transparent wood finish, and a protective coat to seal it from wear and the weather. The crystal clear enamel also helps the preserve the beautiful eagle logo and the two decals underneath.
Our repairs and restorations are done by hand. We mentioned flaws. Here they are:
·
There are small places on wheels near the tires that we missed while repainting. There is also a little overspray on the tires.
·
There are some scratches on the paint of metal parts. We're are partly responsible for those. Sorry. Try as well as we might, we still make mistakes.
·
Much of scratches on the wooden platform and the wooden rails and all metal were done by adventurous kids who crashed into curbs, cars, sidewalks and bumps on the roads.
First Bookshop is pleased to offer to the new owner an ad for S.L. Allen products that include a Flexy Racer. It's pictured, with a Flexible Flyer snow sled. The ad is 62 years old.
T
he front steering mechanism will be removed from the wooden platform to reduce the cost of shipping. The steering mechanism can be reinstalled in less than five minutes using a adjustable wrench, pair of small pliers and a small flat-head screwdriver.
