List (1888-1967) was from a Jewish family in Vienna, his Father was a tailor.  He began to sing in the synagogue choir, as well as church choirs as a boy.  When  the family moved to New York, he studied with Josiah Zuro and to bring in money to his family, he sung in movie theaters before the curtain.  He made his stage debut in opera with the Wiener Volksoper as Mephistopheles in “Faust” in 1922.  In 1923 he was with the St
    ä
ditsche Oper in Berlin and was spotted by Max von Schillings who brought him to the Staatsoper the following year.  He created roles for Franz Schreker, Darius Milhaud and Igor Stravinsky during these years.  In 1933 he sung Gurnemanz, Fafner and Pogner at the Bayreuth Festspiele, the last year he was able to do so.  He left Germany with a contract to sing at the Metropolitan Opera that Fall.  He sung there through 1950. mainly singing Wagner roles, but also Rocco, the Comendatore, and the Old Hebrew and most famously, Baron Ochs.  He returned to Vienna in 1952 after a concert tour of the U.S., Paris and Berlin.  List taught singing in Vienna until his death.
