    Description

Here is a very rare very early vintage original autographed 8" by 10" photo of opera singer Ellen Beach Yaw (1869-1947), from her prime in the 1920s. Often called "Lark Ellen" or "The California Nightingale", Ellen Beach Yaw was a coloratura soprano, best known for her role in the comic opera The Rose of Persia. Beginning voice lessons and performances while she was a child, Yaw made an international tour of private concerts across America and Europe, eventually performing for composer Sir Arthur Sullivan while in London. The young singer made such an impression on the composer that he personally recommended her to be cast in his opera The Rose of Persia, and wrote a special cadenza that only she had the range to sing. However, after reviews came in that the opera was doing poorly, Yaw was dismissed from the role. Despite the poor response to her role, she continued to make opera and concert appearances after with great success, and made a number of recordings that still exist. Yaw eventually retired to California, where she still performed in many productions, with most benefiting charities. Discoloration, minor corner and edge wear. Very rare.
