For sale is an
Antique Hendryx 25 Yard Brass Raised Pillar Reel Circa 1880s Mounted on an Unusual 22 Inch Tip-Up Ice Fishing Rod
.
The reel has patent dates of March 21, 1878 and July 10, 1888 and is excellent condition given its age and use.
The rod is very unusual.
It is flat measuring 22 inches long, 1 3/8 inches wide and 1/4 inch thick.
A piece of the rod measuring 8 1/2 inches long and 7/8 inches wide has been cut out of the upper section of the rod.
It, in turn, has been notched and a wire run through it with a brass weight sliding up and down on the wire.
The piece is hinged so that it tips over and the weight slide to the tip when a fish bites.
The reel is attached to the rod with 2 brass strips, each having 2 screws to hold it in place.
This may be a home-made fishing rig or it could have been manufactured.
Regardless, when coupled with the Hendryx reel it is a very nice piece of late 19
th
century ingenuity and craftmanship.
