Dorati (1906-1988) was Hungarian by birth and a naturalized American citizen.  He studied at the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest with Zoltan Kodály from 1920-1924.  He was an assistant conductor at the Budapest State Opera for the next 4 years and a house conductor at the Dresden Staatsoper for the next 5 years.  Dorati was then appointed Generalmusikdirektor of the town of Münster from 1929-1932.  He was recruited to Paris, where he was the house conductor for Colonel de Basil’s Ballets Russes. He saw what was going on in Europe and left for America in 1937 ostensibly to make his American debut with the National Symphony Orchestra and stayed.  In 1947 he became a naturalized citizen.  His various conducting and music directorships included: American Ballet Theatre (1940-1941), The Dallas Symphony Orchestra (1945-1949), Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra (1949-1960), BBC Symphony (1963-1966), Stockholm Philharmonic (1966-1970), National Symphony Orchestra (1970-1977), Royal Philharmonic (1975-1979), Detroit Symphony Orchestra (1977-1981).
