Description
19th century American iron toy broad axe. A very interesting & appealing example in an unusual size. Probably circa 1880's-1890's. Maker unknown. The length from the top of the iron head to the bottom of the wood handle is 6 1/4 inches. The iron head which measures 3 15/16 inches long by 2 1/16 inch wide has a pleasing rich deep natural patina developed from age & use. The wooden handle has a rich patina from play use.The iron head is attached to the wooden shaft at the top with two handmade nails tightly which fit tightly against the wooden wedge on the top of the shaft. The handmade nails have irregular shaped heads. The tips of the nails project (as made) slightly below the broad ax head. There is a small chip 1/16 inch by 3 /8 inch long missing from the wood where one of the tips of a nail projects through. The weight is 3.6 ounces. This has been in our collection since the mid-1970's & we just decided to sell it.
