You’ve watched the Datsun Z-Car legend grow over the past five years. But you may be surprised at what we have to tell you about another Datsun, the 610. It’s designed by the same engineers that brought you the Z. Its overall engineering profile is remarkably similar to the Z, which makes it a great road car.
The 610’s 2-liter engine has an overhead camshaft, same as the Z-Car. It’s more expensive to make than a standard push-rod engine, but smoother running thanks to 43% fewer parts. The camshaft rides in four, not three, bearings, which makes the
valve geometry more accurate and keeps things in harmony. The crankshaft rides in five main bearings. The aluminum head dissipates heat better than cheaper (but more common) cast iron. And it has a double roller chain, oil-bathed enclosed camshaft drive instead of the more common rubber belt. In all, a sum total of engineering advances that produces overall driving excellence.
