4-Wheel independent suspension, disc brakes, aluminum overhead cam engine, a slick 4-speed. 15 years ago you were lucky to get all that good stuff on a race car.
Those were the days when "sports car" meant a spindly little thing that rattled and snarled and went like a bat. When race preparation meant folding the windscreen. When the whirr and buzz of cam chain was the sine qua non of a hot setup.
Who would have believed that one day you could get all those goodies in an economy Sedan like the Datsun 510? An economy Sedan, for crying out loud! If you’d brought that kind of equipment to Put-In-Bay or Pebble Beach or Watkins Glen you could have put the
shuck on every hotshoe in the pits.
Now your wife can drive it down to the laundromat with a basket of clothes in the back seat. Times sure do change.
We have to modestly admit that we've changed a little faster, though. Because while all those goodies are standard equipment on every Datsun 510 Sedan, there are still a lot of other cars in its class that don’t offer them.
Come to think of it, there are still a few sports cars that don’t.
