    124 MPH UNDER RIVERSIDE

    S CHAMPION BRIDGE!

It was the chance of a lifetime for me, and a couple of hours at Riverside in the Datsun 2000 proved two things: it’s an exciting, exacting track — and Datsun does things with it.
First off, the car feels right, the deep padded buckets supply easy support. The tach and engine instruments are all where they should be. The wheel position is nice; not Italian, but not too close either. The five speed gearbox is a joy, light with short, precise throws.
A flip of the column-locking key and twin carbs take charge right now. The engine warms to running speed in a hurry. 135 horses chuckle in their overhead cam corral.
I’m not a race driver and my car is a perfectly stock 2000. But I must admit to a little excitement as I wheel onto the track and take aim at Turn One. We zip through it. Then up through Turns 2, 3 and 4...The "Esses”... with the power coming on strong, and the sway bars and double acting shocks giving the tires plenty of bite. (I say "We,” because driving this car is that kind of personal experience between you and the machine.)
Into tough Turn Six, I slip down into second gear. The synchros and linkage are so slick. The revs soar, the horses kick up their heels.
A second later, I'm halfway down the short chute to Turn 7, toeing the front discs, hanging it all out through the sharp reverse camber.
    Accelerating through Turn 8, the
long back straight suddenly stretches before me. Now we’ll see what flat-out means to Datsun! 100 in third gear. I check the dials. Everything normal. 110 in fourth.
Still all systems "Go!” with the engine and tires singing a sweet duet. Now, fifth, with the revs and speed rising again. A long pull. There goes the Champion Bridge over my head. In this cruising gear the tach would never get to 7000. But the speedometer says 124 and we must be hitting at least 120. Plenty fast for me!
Turn 9 comes too quickly. It’s a snap going slow. It’s a bear at speed. As tricky a sweeper as I’d care to meet. Done right, you come out flying.
I snick the box into third. "G” forces press me into the resilient bucket seat. We catapult onto the short straight and shoot past Start-Finish at over 100.
Sure... I took another lap. Several of them, collecting thrills and a few tidbits you’ll never read in Competition Press. But the radio plays at over 100, and you can hear it, too. The engine is turning about 4 grand at that speed in fifth, and with the thermostatic fan running free, the quiet up front is uncanny.
The car didn’t heat. The oil pressure was fine and steady. And the gas gauge barely moved. I enjoyed myself thoroughly. You’ll enjoy the Datsun 2000, too! It still delivers more than any other sports car and does it for an amazing low price — 96.*
And if you want the same great lines and 0 of no-cost extras for even less money and a little less power... try the 2000’s high-stepping stablemate ... the Datsun 1600. You’ll get a 96 HP OHV engine for the same kind of performance that’s made the 1600 an "F Production" class winner at tracks over the country. Parts and service at over 600 Datsun dealers across the country. The Sound Move is to...
